History & meaning
The Zhuangzi opens with this bird, and Chinese literature has never quite put it down. In the northern darkness, the text says, there is a fish called Kun, so large that nobody knows how many thousand li across it runs. It changes into a bird called Peng, whose back is equally past measuring, and when Peng rouses itself the sea heaves and the bird climbs ninety thousand li on a whirlwind, bound for the southern ocean. A cicada and a young dove watch this and laugh, because they can barely reach the nearest tree and see no reason for the trouble. That is the argument of the passage rather than a decorative flourish: the small cannot imagine the scale of the large.
Out of that opening came a permanent metaphor. 鹏程万里 is what a Chinese teacher writes in a leaving card, and 大鹏展翅, the great Peng spreading its wings, is what a newspaper says about anything ambitious getting off the ground. A boy named 鹏 is named for distance rather than for rank, which gives the name a warmth that grander characters lack. One caution for English readers: the very common surname Peng is 彭, an unrelated character, as in the singer Peng Liyuan and the tennis player Peng Shuai. Because Chinese naming puts the family name first, the slot in the full name generally settles which Peng is meant.
Why parents choose it
Not many names come with a story that the whole culture can recite, and fewer still have one that is about scale rather than status. Parents also like that the wish is open-ended. 鹏 does not specify what the child should become, only how far he might go.
