History & meaning
This name did not exist until it was given. Simon bar Jonah, a fisherman from Bethsaida, was called Kephas by Jesus — Aramaic for a rock or crag — and John's Gospel stops mid-scene to translate it for Greek readers: "You shall be called Cephas, which means Peter." Greek already had petra for a rock and petros for a stone, so the translators built a masculine personal name, Petros, out of a word that had never been anybody's name before. Latin turned it into Petrus, and from there it went into nearly every language in Europe.
The pun in Matthew 16:18 is the whole point: "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church." In Aramaic those are one word used twice; in Greek they differ by a letter. That sentence is the foundation of the papacy, and St Peter's Basilica in Rome stands over the ground tradition assigns to his grave. Wherever the Church went the name followed, and every Catholic language made its own: Pedro, Pietro, Pierre, Piotr, Ukrainian Petro, and Basque Kepa, which is one of the few forms built from the Aramaic rather than the Greek.

Peter asks nothing of anybody. One spelling, one pronunciation, and it is understood on sight in most of the world. That plainness has quietly become its rarity — a Peter in a class of Bodhis and Bennetts is now the unusual one.
