History & meaning
The first element is a noun that changed jobs. In Old Polish przemysł meant ingenuity, resourcefulness, a clever contrivance — the quality of the man who thinks his way out. In modern Polish the same word means industry, as in heavy industry and the industrial revolution, and you can watch the sense slide from a clever mind to a clever machine to a factory. Bolted to -sław, "glory", by the compounding system described on Stanisław, it gives a name that means something like glory won by wit rather than by force, which is unusual company for the Polish warrior compounds.
Its Czech twin is older and better known. Přemysl the Ploughman is the peasant whom the prophetess Libuše sent for and married, and the dynasty named after him ruled Bohemia until 1306. The Polish line kept the short form too: Przemysł II, duke of Greater Poland, had himself crowned in Gniezno in 1295, the first Polish coronation in more than two centuries, and was assassinated at Rogoźno in February 1296. The longer Przemysław is the later expansion, regularised to match the other -sław names. The border city of Przemyśl is traditionally derived from the same personal name.
