History & meaning
The Latin original is Remigius, traditionally derived from remex, an oarsman — a workmanlike root for a name that ended up at the centre of French national myth. Rémi was bishop of Reims for something close to seventy years in the fifth and sixth centuries, and around 496, though historians argue for 498 or 508, he baptised Clovis, king of the Franks, along with a large body of his warriors. That baptism is the moment usually treated as the founding of Christian France. It put the strongest Frankish king on the Catholic rather than the Arian side of the great argument of the age, and it is why French kings were crowned at Reims for the next thousand years, anointed with oil from an ampulla said to have been provided for Clovis himself.
Rémi and Rémy stayed working French names rather than relics. One of them founded a Charentais wine house in 1724 and put Rémy Martin on bottles worldwide, which is how most English speakers met the word before they met the name. Louisiana, with its French parish records, had Remy long before the rest of America did. The general United States arrived late and by an unlikely route: the 2007 film Ratatouille, whose cook is a rat called Remy. The name has climbed steadily since.
