History & meaning
Laurentum was a town of ancient Latium, the place where Aeneas is supposed to have landed and the seat of King Latinus. Its name has always been read as coming from laurus, the laurel, and that reading may well be a guess made by Romans about their own past, but it is the one that stuck: the laurel wreath is what everyone hears in Lawrence, and it is the same tree behind laureate and baccalaureate. Laurentius the deacon was martyred at Rome in 258, three days after the pope he served, and legend has him roasted alive on a gridiron, joking that he was done on one side. Historians think it far likelier that he was beheaded like the other deacons that summer, but the gridiron is on every church that carries his name.
Where a Dutch pet form cuts is not arbitrary. Bas keeps the head of Sebastiaan, Teun keeps the middle of Teunis, and Rens keeps the tail of Laurens, because that is where the stress falls: low-RENS. Italian did the same thing to Lorenzo and got Renzo. The full form has some good Dutch history behind it too, including Laurens Janszoon Coster of Haarlem, who has a statue on the market square as the inventor of printing, a claim his own city has defended for five hundred years and no serious historian accepts.
Why parents choose it
It is brief and unfussy, contains nothing an English speaker cannot pronounce, and arrives with the laurel attached without having to spell out four syllables to get there. Of all the clipped Dutch names it is one of the easiest to export.

The long form supplies the rest: Laurens ten Dam rode a decade of Grand Tours as one of the toughest Dutch climbers of his era, and Laurens Janszoon Coster remains Haarlem's favourite argument.

Lawrence is the full English form with the saint and the laurel intact. Lars is what Scandinavia did to the same Latin name, cut in a different place. Teun is the same Dutch move applied to a Roman clan name.
