History & meaning
Rogelio begins in a Germanic warband. Hrod meant fame and ger meant spear, and the compound reached France with the Normans as Rogier, which scribes wrote in Latin as Rogerius. Spanish took that Latin form and swapped the second r for an l — the same exchange the language performed on periculum to get peligro and on miraculum to get milagro. What survives is a name that no longer sounds Germanic to anyone who uses it.
There is a second thread. Spain venerates a Rogellus martyred at Córdoba in 852, one of a group of Christians executed under the emirate, and some etymologists route the Spanish name through that Latin name rather than through Roger. Either way, the Church calendar is how it spread: Spanish friars baptised generations of Filipinos out of it, which is why Rogelio belongs as much to the Visayas as to Andalusia. It sits in the Spanish-colonial layer of Filipino naming, distinct from native names like Dakila and Kidlat.

The footballer Rogelio Funes Mori, born in Argentina, went on to play for the Mexican national team.
