History & meaning
Ruairí is a compound, and both halves are still recognisable: rúad, red or red-haired, and rí, king, the same word that heads every Irish king-list. Red king. It was a dynastic name rather than a description, and its most famous holder made it permanently historical. Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair, King of Connacht, became the last High King of Ireland; he submitted to Henry II under the Treaty of Windsor in 1175 and died in 1198 at the abbey of Cong. No High King followed him.
The name travelled north as well as into English. Norse-Gaelic Scotland produced its own Ruaidhrí, a son of Somerled, whose descendants became Clann Ruaidhrí and the MacRories; the Scottish Gaelic spelling settled as Ruairidh. In English records Ruairí was written Rory, and clerks often substituted Roderick as though it were the same name. It is not. Roderick is Germanic, from hrod, fame, and ric, power. The equivalence was administrative convenience, and it lasted centuries.
Why parents choose it
