The construction is the same one that produces Hrach: a quality, then the word for eye. Where Hrach puts fire in front of it, Sevak puts sev, black, and the sense is dark-eyed rather than gloomy. Armenian has a small run of these descriptive compounds and they feel earthier than the church names that dominate the tradition, which is part of the appeal. Its modern life starts with a pen name. Paruyr Ghazaryan, born in the village of Zangakatun in 1924, published as Paruyr Sevak and became the defining Armenian poet of the post-Stalin decades. His long poem Anlreli Zangakatun, usually given in English as The Unsilenceable Belfry, appeared in 1959 and used the life of the composer Komitas to say, within the limits Soviet publishing allowed, what could not yet be said directly about 1915. He died in a car crash on the road to Yerevan in 1971, at forty-seven. Armenian parents began giving the surname as a first name in the years that followed, and it has stayed in the register since.
