Shane and Sean are the same Irish name wearing different accents. In Munster and Connacht, Seán is said with a long back vowel that English ears write as SHAWN. Ulster Irish raises that vowel, producing something closer to SHAYN, and English scribes in the north spelled what they heard. The Gaelic name behind both is Ireland's version of John, taken from Norman French Jehan after the twelfth-century invasion and traceable back to Hebrew Yohanan, "Yahweh is gracious."
