Shenouda
Shenouda is about as Egyptian as a name can be. The word is Coptic, the last written stage of the language the pharaohs spoke, and there is no European version of it to fall back on.

History & meaning
Coptic names divide into two stocks, and this one sits firmly in the older half. Boutros and Girgis came in from Greek with Christianity; Shenouda is built from Egyptian words that had been in the language for millennia before the alphabet changed. Its owner is Shenoute of Atripe, abbot of the White Monastery near Sohag, who died around 465 after an extraordinarily long life running one of the largest monastic federations in the ancient world. He mattered for what he wrote as much as what he built: he composed in Coptic rather than Greek at a time when serious prose meant Greek, and the sermons, letters and monastic rules he left are the largest body of original literature the Coptic language possesses. Without him Coptic writing would be mostly translation.
Modern Egypt attached the name to a second figure of comparable weight. Pope Shenouda III, born Nazeer Gayed in Asyut in 1923, was enthroned as 117th Pope of Alexandria in 1971 and led the Coptic Orthodox Church for forty-one years. In 1981 Sadat revoked his recognition and confined him to the monastery of Saint Bishoy in Wadi Natrun; Mubarak restored him in January 1985. His weekly Wednesday sermons filled the cathedral in Abbasiya for decades, and by the time he died in 2012 the name was in every Coptic family album.
Why parents choose it

Famous Shenoudas
Shenoute of Atripe is the founding bearer and the most important author in the Coptic language. Pope Shenouda III (1923–2012) shaped the modern church and was, for four decades, the most visible Christian in the Arab world. Two earlier popes of Alexandria, in the ninth and eleventh centuries, carried the name before either of them.
Consider instead
Bishoy honours the desert father whose monastery sheltered Shenouda III and is a syllable shorter. Abanoub is the other unmistakably Coptic pick, and contains the ancient Egyptian word for gold. Mina is the commonest Coptic name of all, with a caveat about gender outside Egypt.
