Isizwe is the Xhosa and Zulu word for a nation, and it stretches across senses English keeps apart: a people, an ethnic nation, the country as a state. Its plural izizwe is "the nations". As a given name, stripped to Sizwe, it does something most names do not — it places the boy inside a collective rather than describing him. Nothing in it is about his character; it is about what he belongs to.
That makes it a word with political history attached, and the history is worth knowing before you use the name. Umkhonto we Sizwe, "Spear of the Nation", was the armed wing formed by the African National Congress in 1961 and folded into the national defence force after 1994. In the theatre, Sizwe Banzi Is Dead — devised by Athol Fugard with the actors John Kani and Winston Ntshona and first staged at the Space in Cape Town in October 1972 — turns on a man who takes a dead stranger’s passbook because his own will not let him work. Kani and Ntshona shared a 1975 Tony Award for their performances. In a play about a man giving up his name to survive, calling him Sizwe was not an accident.
