History & meaning
Thabo is joy, in both Sesotho and Setswana. The verb behind it is thaba, to be glad or to rejoice, and thabo is the noun that verb throws off. Sesotho is the language of Lesotho and the Free State, Setswana that of Botswana and the North West; with Sepedi they form the Sotho-Tswana group, and they are close enough that the name reads the same on both sides of the border. Sesotho separately has a noun thaba meaning mountain, familiar from place names like Thaba-Bosiu and Thaba Nchu, but the name comes from the verb.
Thabo is regularly filed alongside Sipho and Themba on lists of African names, as though the three were the same kind of name, and they are not. Sotho-Tswana and Nguni are separate branches of the Bantu family; the grammar rhymes, the vocabulary often does not. Joy in Zulu is injabulo, from jabula — plainly a different word. What the two branches do share is the habit of building names out of ordinary verbs, and even their grammar chimes: Nguni makes the plural imperative with -ni, as in Bongani, while Sotho uses -ng, giving Thabang, "rejoice". Related, and distinctly not the same.
Why parents choose it
Short, bright, easy on non-African tongues once the t is sorted out, and carrying a meaning nobody could object to. It is one of the few southern African names an English-speaking teacher will get right first time.

Thabo Mbeki was deputy president of South Africa under Nelson Mandela from 1994 and president from 1999 until his resignation in September 2008, after the ANC asked him to step down. Thabo Sefolosha, born in Vevey to a South African father and a Swiss mother, was the first Swiss player in the NBA when Chicago drafted him in 2006.
