History & meaning
A great medieval household ran on offices, and the despensier ran the dispense: the room from which bread, ale and provisions were weighed out to everyone who ate at the lord’s expense. The word descends from Latin dispensare, to weigh out, which is also why English has dispensary, expense and pension in the same family. The man who held the job took the job as his name, and it stuck across England.
Two branches made it famous. The Despensers were the notorious favourites of Edward II, and Hugh Despenser the Younger was executed for it in 1326. The Spencers of Althorp took a quieter route, making a fortune in sheep in the fifteenth century and holding an earldom ever since; Winston Churchill was born Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill. As a first name it is a modern American habit, one of the surname names that came through in the 1980s and 1990s and has stayed politely in circulation.
Why parents choose it
It is preppy without being stiff, and the crisp opening consonants give it more spine than the -er ending suggests. Spence is a genuinely good short form, which is not true of every surname name. It has also aged better than most of the surname names it arrived with, because the sound is old enough to predate the trend rather than define it.
