Meaning: depends on the hanja — usually 善 "good, virtuous" with 宇 "cosmos", 友 "friend" or 佑 "to protect."
Sunwoo
| Origin | Korean (Sino-Korean) — two hanja read 선 + 우; also the two-character surname 鮮于 |
|---|---|
| Meaning | Character-dependent. Common writings are 善宇 (good + cosmos), 善友 (good + friend) and 宣佑 (proclaim + protect) |
| Pronunciation | SUHN-woo — the first vowel is ㅓ, not the English sun |
| Revised Romanization | Seon-u |
| Popularity | Outside the current U.S. top 100. A steady, unflashy choice in Korea, and one of the few Korean names given to girls as well as boys |
| Variants | Seonwoo, Seon-u, Sun-woo, Sonu |
| Nicknames | None in Korean practice; English speakers who read sun in the first syllable are misreading the vowel |
| Surname note | 鮮于 (Seonu) is one of a small set of two-syllable Korean surnames, with Namgung 南宮, Hwangbo 皇甫 and Dokgo 獨孤 |
History & meaning
Sunwoo is one of the more transparent names in this cluster, because its first syllable is dominated by a single character. 선 is nearly always 善, good or virtuous — the same character that heads the Korean words for a good deed and for goodwill — though 宣 "to proclaim" and 鮮 "fresh, bright" both turn up. Behind it, 우 supplies 宇 the cosmos, 佑 and 祐 divine assistance, or 友 a friend. The result is a name that generally says something like "good and protected" or, in the 善友 writing, simply "a good friend". Very few Korean names wear their intention that plainly.
The other thing to know about Sunwoo is that it can sit on either side of a Korean name. Almost every Korean surname is a single syllable, but a handful are not, and 鮮于, read Seonu, is on that short list along with Namgung, Hwangbo and Dokgo. Korean readers resolve the ambiguity instantly from position, because the family name always comes first: Kim Sun-woo is a man given the name Sunwoo, while Sunwoo Jung-a is a woman whose surname is Sunwoo. That the same string works as both is a small quirk of the system rather than a coincidence — the Korean names page explains how the surname pool ended up so lopsided.
Why parents choose it
Warmth, mostly. The 善 reading is a straightforward statement of character rather than an aspiration to greatness, and the name's use for daughters as well as sons makes it an easy pick for families who want something unforced. It also survives English speakers on the first attempt, spelling misreading aside.
Middle names for Sunwoo
Sunwoo's own vowels are round and low, so middles with brighter vowels lift it: Sunwoo Everett, Sunwoo Silas, Sunwoo Henry, Sunwoo August. In the other direction it makes an unusually good middle name, because it never fights the first name for attention. The middle names guide has more.
Famous Sunwoos
Kim Sun-woo pitched in Major League Baseball for the Boston Red Sox and the Montreal Expos before returning to Korea and a long career with the Doosan Bears. Sunwoo Jung-a, one of the most inventive singer-songwriters in Korean pop, carries the other version: for her, Sunwoo is the family name and Jung-a the given one. Kim Sun-woo of the group The Boyz performs under the given name alone.
Consider instead
Siwoo shares the 우 and is the more heavily registered of the two. Eunwoo keeps the shape and swaps in a first syllable meaning kindness or silver. Gunwoo is the sturdier option, built on the same second element.
