History & meaning

은 is very nearly fixed in practice: almost every Eunwoo is written with 恩, kindness or favour, the character behind 은혜 eunhye, the ordinary Korean word for grace and the standard one for divine grace in Korean Christianity. It is the second syllable that varies. 宇 is the eaves of a roof, extended in classical usage to the whole extent of space — the same character an English reader will meet as the yu of the Chinese name Yuxuan. 佑 and 祐 both mean help or protection from above. 雨 is rain, 優 is excellence. Grace and the cosmos, or grace and protection: either way the name is unusually gentle for a boys' name in any tradition.

The spelling deserves a note of its own. Revised Romanization renders 은우 as Eun-u, and that is the official form, but Korean naming practice has long written the syllable 우 as “woo” — the same convention that gives Sunwoo, Hyunwoo and Woojin their English spellings. The convention has won, and Eunwoo is what almost everyone writes. One more genuine complication: 은 is one of a small set of syllables at home in both men's and women's names, so while Eunwoo reads as a boys' name in Korea, girls carry it too. The Korean names page covers the hanja system in full.

Why parents choose it

Softness without sweetness. The name opens on an unstressed vowel and closes on a rounded one, which makes it quieter than the -jun and -hoon names around it on the registry, and the 恩 meaning is warm in a way that plenty of Korean families, Christian ones especially, choose deliberately.

Middle names for Eunwoo

The trailing -oo is the thing to manage: a consonant start on the middle name keeps the two from blurring. Eunwoo Daniel, Eunwoo Matthew, Eunwoo Grant, Eunwoo Nathaniel. The middle names guide covers the join.

Famous Eunwoos

Cha Eun-woo is the reason most people outside Korea have heard the name at all: singer with the group Astro and lead in True Beauty and My ID is Gangnam Beauty. It is worth knowing that Eun-woo is a stage name — he was born Lee Dong-min — which is itself a useful data point, because Korean entertainers pick stage names for how they sound and how they look on a poster. Someone chose this one on purpose.

Consider instead

Sunwoo keeps the 우 ending and swaps in a brighter first syllable. Hyunwoo is the same shape with more formality. Gunwoo trades gentleness for solidity while holding the rhythm.
