History & meaning
Aruṇa began as a plain colour word. It covers the whole ruddy end of the spectrum, from a horse's chestnut coat to the underside of a cloud, and it settled on one thing above all: the red that fills the eastern sky before the sun appears. Sanskrit treats that light as a being in its own right. Aruṇa is the son of Kashyapa and Vinatā and the elder brother of Garuda, born from an egg his mother opened too early, so that only the upper half of him was formed. He takes the reins of the sun's chariot, and his body is the screen that keeps the full force of Surya off the world behind him.
That mythology is not decorative in Indian life, because the dawn is a scheduled hour. Aruṇodaya, the rising of the red, is a fixed point in the ritual calendar: it is when a fast begins, when the sandhyā prayers are said facing east, and when the Gayatri mantra is recited to the sun as it comes up.
