History & meaning
匠 is not a compliment handed out lightly in Japanese. It names someone who has given a working life to one craft, and it sits inside the words for a great master, 巨匠, for a teacher of an art, 師匠, and for design itself, 意匠. The reading takumi is the native Japanese one, older than the Chinese vocabulary layered on top of it, and it meant a carpenter or joiner before it meant anything more abstract. The word is still doing industrial work: Toyota grades a small number of its most experienced hand-finishers as takumi, and Lexus has spent two decades advertising the fact.
As a name, though, the sound is not the property of 匠. The commonest modern spellings are two-character compounds built on 拓, to open up or reclaim: 拓海 puts that against the sea, 拓実 against truth, 拓真 against the genuine article. A family choosing 拓海 is naming a boy for opening the ocean, not for cabinetmaking, and both are Takumi. The name rose through the 1990s and 2000s and reached readers outside Japan largely through a street-racing comic, whose driver hero, Takumi Fujiwara, delivers tofu in a Toyota — fiction, but the reason a lot of non-Japanese know the word at all.
Why parents choose it
Names about work are rare in any language. Most of the world's boys' names promise strength, light, God or a landscape; Takumi promises craft, patience and a trade learned properly. That is an unusual thing to wish on a child and a genuinely attractive one. Practically, it is three clean syllables with no sound English lacks, and the short form Taku travels easily.

Makoto is the same three-beat shape and another plain word, 誠, sincerity. Kenji is shorter and reads as a generation older. Takeshi shares the opening syllable and swaps craft for valour.
