History & meaning
Vietnamese personal names run surname first, given name last, and it is the last syllable a person is actually called by — Mr Thanh, never Mr Nguyễn. That final slot is where meaning is chosen, and 成 has held a place in it for centuries. The character means to complete, to bring off, to become: something unfinished arriving at its finished state. Vietnamese uses it constantly without a thought for names, in thành công for success, hoàn thành for completing a task, trưởng thành for growing up. As a name it is a wish stated as a fact.
The complication is that the Latin alphabet, adopted for Vietnamese in place of Chinese characters and standardised in the twentieth century, records the tone with a mark that English keyboards discard. Thành 成 is one name. Thanh 清, "clear", and Thanh 青, "blue-green", are others, and they are heavily favoured for girls — which is why an English-speaking reader meets Thanhs of both sexes and assumes the name is neutral. It is not, quite; the tone is doing work the spelling hides. There is a third layer too: 城, also read thành, means a citadel or city wall, and it is the reason a Vietnamese city is a thành phố and the old fortress at Huế is a thành.
Why parents choose it
It is the least ornamental of the classic wishes. Names like Minh and Vinh hand a child brightness or glory; Thành hands him the act of finishing what he starts, which is a smaller thing to promise and an easier one to grow into. It also sounds unfussy in Vietnam, the naming equivalent of a plain good coat.
Middle names for Thanh
The name ends on a nasal that likes an open vowel after it, so a middle name starting with a consonant reads cleanest: Thanh Peter, Thanh Daniel, Thanh Vincent, Thanh Christopher. Households that use the Vietnamese order at home and the English order everywhere else usually park the heritage syllable in the middle instead, which the middle names guide treats as its own problem.
Famous Thanhs
Trấn Thành is the best-known bearer alive: a Ho Chi Minh City comedian and television host who moved into directing and whose 2021 film Bố Già broke every Vietnamese box-office record standing at the time. Nguyễn Thành Chung has spent his career as a centre-back for Hanoi FC and the Vietnam national side. The level-tone Thanh has its own giant — Nguyễn Chí Thanh, the four-star general who died in 1967, has a main road named after him in what feels like every city in the country.
Consider instead
Duc 德, virtue, is the same kind of moral instruction with a harder consonant. Hieu 孝 is filial piety, the most specifically Vietnamese wish on this list. Tri 智, wisdom, keeps the achievement theme but moves it from doing to knowing.
