History & meaning
Themba is a verb before it is a name. In Zulu and Xhosa themba means to trust, to rely on, to have confidence in, and the noun it produces, ithemba, is hope. English splits those into two words and treats them as different mental states; Nguni keeps them in one, so trusting a person and hoping for an outcome are the same act aimed in different directions. A boy called Themba is named for both at once.
The stem is a workhorse. Thembinkosi puts the trust in the Lord, Thembalethu makes the hope collective — ours — and Sithembiso turns it into a promise. Themba is also a South African surname of some standing: Can Themba, the Sophiatown journalist who wrote for Drum in the 1950s, left behind the short story "The Suit", which has had a long second life on stage. Because Ndebele is an Nguni language too, the name is as ordinary in Bulawayo as in Durban.
