History & meaning

Tiago exists because pilgrims cut a word in the wrong place. Latin Iacobus wore down in the northwest of Iberia to Iago, the apostle buried at Compostela was Sant' Iago, and after four centuries of that phrase being shouted on the road speakers re-divided it as San Tiago. The second half walked off as a name in its own right, and Portuguese — with the same saint, the same pilgrim traffic and its own Order of Santiago — kept it. The meaning comes down whole from Hebrew Ya'aqov: supplanter, from the story of Jacob gripping his twin's heel, though many scholars read the original as a sentence name, may God protect.

Today the name is ordinary in Portugal and enormous in Brazil, where it is usually spelled Thiago. That H is a fossil. Portuguese used to write Greek-looking spellings throughout — Thiago, Theophilo, Philippe — and the orthographic reforms of the early twentieth century removed them from the language, but personal names were left alone, and Brazilian families held on to the older look. Portugal went with the reform and writes Tiago. Both are said identically, and both are legal in both countries.

The site now has all six, so here is the family sorted out. Iago is the oldest of them, the medieval Galician-Portuguese descendant of Iacobus and the form the misdivision worked on. Santiago is the saint's title fused to that name, Sanctus Iacobus run together until it could not be pulled apart. Tiago and Thiago are the two spellings of what came off the end of it, Portuguese and Brazilian respectively. James is the English cousin, arriving by a different Latin route through Iacomus, which also gave Iberian Jaime. And Diogo and Diego — the pair everybody assumes belong here — probably do not: the medieval documents write them as Didacus, a form that behaves like a separate word and sits alongside Iago rather than replacing it. The Santiago derivation for Diego is a folk etymology that most specialists now reject, and where Didacus itself came from is still open.

Three thousand years of apostle in five letters, with no accent, no digraph and no silent consonant. Tiago crosses between Portuguese and English almost without loss, which few Portuguese names manage.

Famous Tiagos

Tiago Splitter, from Blumenau in Santa Catarina, won an NBA title with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014. Tiago Monteiro drove in Formula One for Jordan and stood on the podium at Indianapolis in 2005. Tiago Rodrigues, the Portuguese playwright and director, has run the Festival d'Avignon since 2023.

Thiago is the same name in the Brazilian spelling and much better known in the United States. Santiago is the whole word Tiago was cut from, saint and all. Diogo is the Portuguese name most often mistaken for a relative of this one, and is worth reading about for that reason alone.
