History & meaning
Thomas is a nickname that hardened into a name. The Aramaic word means "twin", and the Gospel of John, writing for Greek readers who would not know that, translates it on the spot: "Thomas, called Didymus". Being told a name's meaning inside scripture is rare. Whose twin he was is not recorded; the Syriac tradition called him Judas Thomas and the apocryphal Acts of Thomas sent him to India, where the Saint Thomas Christians of Kerala still trace their church to his mission. His famous scene is in John 20, where he refuses to believe until he can put his hand in the wound and then produces the strongest confession in the Gospels. "Doubting Thomas" comes from that passage and is a little unfair to the man who said it.
Polish spelling keeps the name almost intact, which is why it is the easiest entry point in the whole Polish set. One rule does the work: sz is sh, the same rule that governs Leszek and Mateusz. Everything else is where an English reader would put it, stress included. The name has been ordinary in Poland since the Middle Ages, held its place through the twentieth century without ever spiking, and its nickname Tomek is so common it functions almost as a generic for a Polish boy.
