History & meaning
Hebrew liked to build names out of the same two ideas, God and giving, and rearranged them freely: Netanel is "God has given", Yehonatan is "Yahweh has given", and Mattityahu, the source of this one, is "gift of Yahweh". The Greek came out as Matthaios and the bearer was a tax collector at Capernaum, called away from his booth in a single sentence of the Gospel that carries his name — the book that opens the New Testament with seventeen verses of genealogy and gives the four evangelists their emblems, his being the winged man. Latin made him Matthaeus, and Polish, which likes to keep the Greek and Latin ending visible, made him Mateusz.
That -eusz is a small closed club in Polish: Mateusz, Tadeusz, Eustachy, Ambroży's cousins in the classical register. It also hides a trap, because English eyes read eu as one sound. It is two: mah-TEH-oosh. As for the charts, Mateusz is a recent success rather than an inherited one. It was uncommon before the 1980s, climbed steeply through the 1990s, and is now everywhere among Poles in their twenties and thirties, which makes it the young counterpart to the older Maciej.
Why parents choose it
Because it is the Polish spelling of a name the whole world already owns. A Mateusz can be Matt in London, Mateo in Madrid and Mati at home, and none of it is a compromise. It also has no diacritics, which quietly matters for anyone filling in foreign paperwork.
Middle names for Mateusz

Famous Mateuszes
Mateusz Morawiecki, a banker before he was a politician, was prime minister of Poland from 2017 to 2023. Mateusz Kusznierewicz won Olympic gold in the Finn class at Atlanta in 1996 and has been sailing at that level ever since. Mateusz Klich played in midfield for Leeds United and for Poland.

Maciej is the other apostle, older in feel and shorter in the mouth. Matteo is the Italian, all vowels. Matthew is the plain English original if the Polish spelling is a bridge too far.
