History & meaning
Three Armenian names beginning in Vah- are constantly confused, and they are three different words. Vahagn is a god, taken from Iranian Verethragna. Vahe is a legendary king with no settled etymology. Vahan is the plainest of the three: a shield, the object, still the ordinary word for one. As a name it asks for protection rather than conquest, which is a distinction Armenian parents notice.
Its bearer earned the meaning. Vahan Mamikonian was the nephew of Vardan, who had died at Avarayr in 451 leading the revolt against Sasanian religious policy. Thirty years later Vahan took up the same fight, held out through a long guerrilla campaign from 481, and in 484 negotiated the Nvarsak Treaty: freedom of worship for Armenian Christians, the removal of Zoroastrian fire temples, and his own appointment as marzpan, the shah's governor of Armenia. What his uncle had failed to win in a single day's battle, he obtained at a negotiating table, and Armenian historians have never quite decided which of the two deserves more credit. The name later belonged to two of the finest modern Armenian poets, one on each side of the language divide.
