Gaulish had a word for the alder tree, verno-, and it left its mark all over the map of France: Vernon, Verneuil, La Vergne, Vernet. French still keeps verne and vergne as regional words for the tree. The Norman family that held the town of Vernon on the Seine took the place as their name, crossed the Channel in the wake of the Conquest, and settled into English landholding as the de Vernons, later simply Vernon.
Turning it into a first name was a Victorian idea, part of the nineteenth-century enthusiasm for putting aristocratic surnames at the front. America took to it more warmly than Britain did. Vernon was a common, unremarkable choice for boys born in the first quarter of the twentieth century — the sort of name that turns up two or three times in any large family tree from that era — and it has been sliding quietly downhill ever since.
