Finnish forestry vocabulary is unusually fine-grained, and vesa sits inside it. It is not a seedling and not a sapling grown from seed: it is the shoot that comes up out of a stump or a root after the tree above it has been cut. The verb vesoa describes exactly that behaviour, and vesakko is the low tangle of it that takes over a clearing within a couple of summers. A Finnish speaker meeting the name hears "young shoot" first and thinks no harder about it than an English speaker thinks about Heather — but the precise sense is there underneath, and it is a more stubborn image than most nature names offer.
Vesa's own moment came in the 1950s and 1960s, later than the great wave of plain-word Finnish names that produced Toivo and Onni around 1900. That timing put it in the middle of a Finnish habit that peaked at the same time: the hyphenated double first name, Vesa-Matti, Vesa-Pekka, Jukka-Pekka, treated as a single unit and used whole. He also played the flute well enough to record it. Vesa Toskala kept goal in the NHL for San Jose and then Toronto through the 2000s, in the long line of Finnish goaltenders the league has relied on.
