Volodymyr
The prince who brought Christianity to Kyivan Rus in 988 was Volodymyr, and the name has been Ukrainian ever since. It is not a variant spelling of the Russian Vladimir; both descend from the same Old East Slavic original by different routes.

History & meaning
The first half of the name is secure. Volod- is the old Slavic root for holding power, the same root behind volost, a medieval district. The second half is argued over: some read it as Slavic mir, which covers both peace and the world, and some as a Slavic remodelling of the Germanic ending -mēraz, famous. Either way the sense lands close to "great ruler", which is what a tenth-century Rus prince would have wanted it to say.
The Ukrainian and Russian forms diverge for a reason worth knowing. Native East Slavic speech kept a vowel on both sides of the l in this root, giving volod-; Church Slavonic, the South Slavic language of the liturgy, had vlad- instead. Russian took the churchly form for the name and got Vladimir, while Ukrainian kept the inherited one and got Volodymyr. Russian preserves the same doublet in ordinary words, using the borrowed vlast for power beside the native volost. Neither name is a misspelling of the other; they are two outcomes of one word.
Why parents choose it
Volodymyr is a serious name and makes no attempt to be anything else. Four syllables, a saint at the root of the national story, and a set of warm short forms to fall back on in daily life. Among Ukrainian families abroad it is one of the clearest ways to keep a Ukrainian name intact rather than translating it into English.
