History & meaning
Set this name beside the rest of the Russian stock and the difference is immediate. Vasily is Greek, Semyon and Matvey are Hebrew, Yevgeny is Greek again — all of them arrived with the church and none of them mean anything in Russian. Vsevolod means something in Russian. It is assembled from two live pieces: vse, all, the word a modern speaker uses a hundred times a day, and volod-, an old verb root for holding power. Say it out and a Russian hears the sense of it. The root also explains a spelling puzzle: East Slavic kept the full -olo- in the middle of such words, while Church Slavonic imported a South Slavic version with the vowels rearranged. That is why Russian says Vladimir but Ukrainian says Volodymyr, and why Vsevolod, which never went through the church, keeps its -volo- intact.
The bearers are princes, because this was a name of the ruling house. Vsevolod Yaroslavich, son of Yaroslav the Wise and Grand Prince of Kyiv until 1093, was remembered by his own son, Vladimir Monomakh, as a man who had learned five languages sitting at home. A century later Vsevolod the Big Nest ruled the north-east from Vladimir for thirty-six years and earned the nickname from the size of his family; The Tale of Igor's Campaign says he could splash the Volga dry with his oars. Because there is no saint called Vsevolod, these men were all baptised under a second name, which is how the dynasty handled the gap between Slavic heritage and Christian obligation.

Nobody outside Russia has it, and even inside Russia it turns heads slightly. It also collapses neatly: Seva is two easy syllables and does all the daily work, so the long form can stay on documents.

Vsevolod Meyerhold rebuilt Russian theatre around a system of trained physical movement he called biomechanics, refused to make his work conform, and was shot in 1940. Vsevolod Pudovkin directed Mother in 1926, one of the founding films of Soviet montage. Vsevolod Bobrov captained the USSR football team at the 1952 Olympics and won Olympic ice hockey gold with them four years later.
