History & meaning
Zachariah is one of the clearest theophoric names in the Hebrew Bible: zakhar, he remembered, joined to Yah, the shortened form of the divine name. "Yahweh has remembered" — a statement of relief as much as of faith, the kind of name given after a long wait. Some thirty different men carry it across the Old Testament, which tells you how ordinary it once was.
Two of them matter. The prophet Zechariah, working in Jerusalem around 520 BC, urged the returned exiles to rebuild the Temple and left one of the twelve minor prophetic books. In Luke's gospel, Zechariah is the elderly priest struck dumb for doubting the angel who promises him a son, and who recovers his voice to name the boy John. Greek rendered the name Zacharias, Latin followed, and English produced two survivals: Zachary, worn short, and Zachariah, kept long. Zechariah is the spelling most Old Testament translations use; Zachariah is the commoner one on birth certificates.
Why parents choose it
It is a full-length biblical name in the mould of Jeremiah and Josiah, with the same four-syllable roll and the same soft ending, but it is much less used than either. Zach is waiting as an escape hatch on any day the whole thing is too much. It also survives being said in full by a teacher, which is the practical test any four-syllable name has to pass.

Zachariah Chandler was a founder of the Republican Party, a senator from Michigan from 1857, and Secretary of the Interior under Grant. Zachariah Allen, a Rhode Island inventor and industrialist, pioneered factory fire safety and helped create mutual fire insurance. The two biblical figures remain the name's real anchors. The spelling runs right through nineteenth-century American records, especially in Quaker and Baptist families who preferred full Old Testament forms to clipped ones.

Zachary is the same name at three syllables and far more familiar. Josiah matches the shape and the Old Testament register. Obadiah is the deeper cut for parents who want a minor prophet nobody else is using.
