History & meaning
Two explanations circulate, and honesty requires saying that neither is proved. The first is American and concrete. Ebenezer Zane, a Virginia-born frontiersman, cut Zane's Trace through the Ohio country in the 1790s, and his family's name attached itself to Zanesville, Ohio. A descendant of that family, born in Zanesville in 1872 and christened Pearl Zane Gray, dropped the Pearl, respelled the surname and became Zane Grey, whose Westerns sold in the tens of millions. That is how most Americans first met the word as a name. The second explanation, repeated confidently in a lot of baby-name books, derives Zane from Zani or Gianni, Italian pet forms of Giovanni, and therefore hands it the meaning of John: God is gracious. It is a tidy story with a thin evidential trail. Treat any flat assertion that Zane means God is gracious as a guess in formal dress.
What is not in doubt is the shape of its American life. Zane arrived as a surname, was carried into the given-name column by a bestselling novelist, and has stayed there ever since, never fashionable and never absent. It remains outside the current U.S. top 100. The Z gives it an edge that names of the same length lack, and Z-initial boy names are scarce enough that one still registers.
Why parents choose it
It is short without being soft, modern-sounding without being new, and it opens on the least-used consonant in English. Parents drawn to Kai or Max often land here for the same reasons and stay for the extra bite.
