Zev is the Hebrew word for wolf, used without adornment. Its status as a name comes from a single verse: in Genesis 49, Jacob blesses each of his sons in turn and says of the youngest, "Benjamin is a ravenous wolf". That line attached the animal to the tribe of Benjamin permanently, and Jewish families have paired the names ever since — a boy called Binyamin Ze'ev carries both halves of the blessing.
The Yiddish-speaking world added a second layer. Yiddish translated Ze'ev as Wolf, and the double name Ze'ev Wolf, Hebrew and Yiddish side by side, became a standard formation in eastern Europe. When modern Hebrew took hold in the twentieth century the Yiddish half was often dropped, which is how Ze'ev Jabotinsky, born Vladimir in Odessa in 1880, ended up under the Hebrew form.
