Adeyemi has three parts and an attitude. Adé is the crown, the same royal element that opens Adebayo and Adekunle. Yẹ is the verb "to befit" — the word you would use to say a garment suits someone. Mí is "me". The crown befits me: the child is declared equal to the honour before it can hold its own head up.
That final -mí is worth pausing on, because it decides who is talking. A large family of Yoruba names is composed in the first person and voiced by the child, not the parents: Adeyemi says the crown suits him, Abayomi says people would have gloated over him, Olumide says the lord has come to him. Because the language is transparent, the sentence never stops being audible — a Yoruba speaker greeting an Adeyemi is repeating the claim aloud, several times a day, for a lifetime.
