History & meaning
Adrian began as an address, not a compliment. Hadria was a town in Picenum on the Italian Adriatic coast, and Romans from there took the family name Hadrianus. One of them became emperor in 117 and put the name on a wall, a villa and a mausoleum, all of which are still standing in some form. Because the name says where you are from rather than what you are like, it has no heroic gloss attached to it, and that is part of its durability: nothing about it dates.
Christianity carried it forward. Adrian of Nicomedia, a Roman guard martyred around 306 and later a patron of soldiers, was widely venerated in Flanders and the Low Countries, where Adriaan became a common name and then a common surname. Six popes took the name, among them Adrian IV, the Englishman Nicholas Breakspear and the only English pope. In America the modern climb owes a great deal to Spanish-speaking families, for whom Adrián has never gone out of use.
