History & meaning
Start with the saint, because he is the reason the name travelled beyond Greece. Cosmas and Damian were twin brothers, physicians in Roman Syria, martyred under Diocletian around the turn of the fourth century. The Greek church calls them the anargyroi, the silverless ones, because they refused payment from their patients, and they became patron saints of doctors, surgeons and pharmacists. Churches dedicated to them went up across the Mediterranean, and the name went with them.
The etymology is unusually clean. Damianos is built on damazō, to tame or subdue, which belongs to the same ancient word family as Latin domāre and English tame. As the cult of the twins spread, so did the name: it became a staple in Poland, where Damian is still entirely ordinary, and throughout the Spanish and Italian-speaking world. English took it up properly only in the twentieth century. The 1976 film The Omen then hung a horror-film shadow on the French spelling Damien, which is a fair part of why American parents lean toward the -an ending.
