The Hebrew is 'Adri'el, and the second half is easy: El, God, the same element that closes Daniel, Gabriel, Ezekiel and dozens of others. The first half is where readings part company. Most dictionaries take it from eder, a flock or herd, giving "flock of God" — a shepherd image, not a martial one. A minority tradition reads the opening as a form of "help", producing "God is my help". Neither reading is fanciful, and no responsible source claims certainty between them.

The biblical Adriel is a bit player. In 1 Samuel 18:19 Saul promises his elder daughter Merab to David, then gives her to Adriel the Meholathite instead, and the name effectively disappears from the record. It stayed out of use in English for the whole of the Christian era. What brought it back is recent and largely American: Adriel arrived through Spanish-speaking families, spread on the strength of its sound, and has landed at #84 in the current U.S. top 100. Modern name lists often file it as an angel name, but that association comes from later esoteric compilations rather than from scripture.

Why parents choose it

Adriel solves a specific problem. Parents who like the biblical -el names usually find them taken — Daniel, Gabriel and Nathaniel have all had their turn as playground staples. Adriel has the identical shape and none of the wear. It also crosses languages without a respelling: English speakers front-load the stress, Spanish speakers put it on the final syllable, and nobody has to correct anybody. The built-in nickname Ari is a real bonus, since it works from toddlerhood to a résumé.

Famous Adriels

The name has no long roster yet, which is part of its appeal. The best-known living bearer is Adriel Favela, the Mexican-American regional Mexican singer and songwriter. Beyond that, Adriel's cultural presence is thin and recent: a supporting figure in the book of Samuel, a name that recurs in modern angelology lists, and, since the late 2010s, a steady climber on American birth certificates.

Consider instead

If the sound is what you want but you would rather have history behind it, Adrian is the near-twin — though the two are unrelated, Adrian coming from the Latin Hadrianus, "man from Hadria". Gabriel gives you the same ending with an archangel attached. And if the nickname is the real draw, Ari stands perfectly well on its own.
