History & meaning
Ākāśa is not a poetic word kept in reserve. It is the word a Hindi speaker uses while pointing at the sky, built from ā- and the root kāś, to shine or become visible: the open, visible expanse. Hindi drops the final Sanskrit vowel, which is how ākāśa becomes Akash on a birth certificate.
The technical sense is the interesting one. In the classical Indian physics of the Vaisheshika and Samkhya schools, ākāśa is the fifth of the five great elements — earth, water, fire, air and ether — and it is the subtlest of them, the medium in which sound exists. That places Akash in the same set as Tejas, which is the technical term for the fire element. The word also carries a certain gravity in Indian public life: ākāśvāṇī, a voice from the sky, is both the divine disembodied voice of the epics and, since 1957, the official name of All India Radio.
Why parents choose it
It is a vocabulary name rather than a deity name, and that distinction matters to a lot of families.
