Tejas is one of those Sanskrit abstract nouns that covers a physical thing and a human quality with no visible seam. It is the heat and light of a fire, the edge of a blade, the glare of the sun — and equally the presence a person gives off, the quality that makes a room go quiet. Ayurveda uses it in a third, technical way, as one of the subtle essences paired with ojas and prāṇa. In the classical list of the five great elements, tejas is the standard term for fire, which puts the name in the same set as Akash, ether.
The name is unusual in keeping its Sanskrit ending. Most Sanskrit words shed their final vowel on the way into Hindi, but tejas belongs to a class of neuter stems in -as and arrives with the s intact, which is why it looks longer and more formal than Veer or Yash. The word is also conspicuous in modern India in a way few name-words are: Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee gave the name Tejas to India's light combat aircraft in 2003, and Indian Railways attached it to its Tejas Express services from 2017. Among people it is strongly Marathi and Gujarati — a Tejas is far likelier to be from Pune or Ahmedabad than from Delhi.
