History & meaning
Akira is one of the rare Japanese names where the sound and the sense agree. It is a kun’yomi name, built from native Japanese vocabulary rather than borrowed Chinese readings, and it comes straight out of akiraka 明らか: clear, evident, plain to see. The usual writing is the single character 明, which sets the sun beside the moon. Families who choose another character rarely stray far — 亮, 昭, 彰 and 章 all circle the same idea of clarity or brightness. Where most Japanese boys’ names need a kanji before you can say what they mean, Akira mostly does not.
Inside Japan the name is dated. It was heavily used from the 1920s through the 1960s and now reads as a father’s or a grandfather’s name, in the way Gerald or Dennis does in English. Outside Japan it went the other direction. Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira, serialised as manga from 1982 and released as an animated film in 1988, put the name in front of a generation of Western readers who had never encountered a Japanese given name before, and it has been quietly available in English-speaking countries ever since.
