Sanskrit arjuna means white, bright or clear — the colour of silver and of the arjuna tree, whose pale bark still carries the word in Indian botany. It is one of those roots that shows the shape of the whole Indo-European family: the same ancient element behind arjuna surfaces in Greek arguros and Latin argentum, both meaning silver, and from there in the name of Argentina.
The name's weight comes from the Mahabharata. Arjuna is the third of the five Pandava brothers, the archer who wins Draupadi at her svayamvara and who, on the eve of the battle at Kurukshetra, loses his nerve at the thought of fighting his own kin. His charioteer, Krishna, answers him — and that answer is the Bhagavad Gita, one of the central texts of Hinduism. To be named Arjun in India is to be named after a man whose defining moment is a crisis of conscience rather than a kill, which is a rarer thing in an epic than it sounds.
