Aurelius began as a Roman nomen, the name of the gens Aurelia, a plebeian family that pushed into the consulship in the third century BC. The obvious connection is to aurum, gold, and aureus, golden, and that is the gloss the name has carried for two thousand years. One derivation puts an older layer underneath it: a Sabine word ausel, meaning sun, which would make the earliest form Auselius. The sun and the gold are close enough that the sense has never really moved.
Christianity kept the name in circulation after the empire stopped needing family names. Aurelius of Carthage, bishop of that city and a colleague of Augustine, died around 430 and gave the name a saint to hang on. Vulgar Latin and then Italian, Spanish and Portuguese softened the ending, and Aurelio has been ordinary in all three languages ever since. It reached the United States in the luggage of Italian and Mexican families, which is still largely where American Aurelios come from.

Four syllables is a lot of name, and that is the point. Aurelio is unhurried, romantic and completely unambiguous about where it comes from, yet an English speaker can read it correctly on the first attempt.
