Valerius was not chosen for its meaning in Rome; it was inherited. It marked membership of the gens Valeria, one of the oldest patrician clans in the city, whose members appear in the consular lists from the first years of the Republic onward. But the root is transparent in a way most Roman clan names are not: valere, to be strong and to be in good health, a verb Romans used every day and signed letters with — vale, keep well. A Valerius was, at least in origin, one of the sound and vigorous.
Christianity turned the clan name into a personal one. Several early saints and bishops called Valerius made the name usable as a baptismal choice, and it descended into Italian as Valerio, into Spanish as Valerio and Valeriano, into French as Valère. Its cousin took a different road: Valentinus, from the participle valens, produced Valentine, which means the two names share a Latin ancestor without either being a form of the other.
