History & meaning
Aurelius was never a first name in Rome. It was a nomen — the middle element that told you which clan a man belonged to. The gens Aurelia was a plebeian family that forced its way into the consulship in the third century BC and stayed in the record for the next six hundred years. The name is traditionally derived from aureus, golden, itself from aurum, gold. A minority of scholars push it back further to a Sabine form Auselius connected with a sun deity, which Latin speakers then heard as gold and respelled accordingly. Both routes end in the same shine.
What fixed the name in the Western memory was one man. Marcus Aurelius ruled from 161 to 180 and wrote the Meditations in Greek, on campaign, with no intention of publishing them. Christianity then carried the name past Rome: Aurelius, bishop of Carthage, was Augustine's close ally, and Augustine's own full name was Aurelius Augustinus. In the Romance languages the name softened into Aurelio and Aurèle and stayed in ordinary use. English speakers left the full Latin form to the history books until quite recently.
Why parents choose it
Two things are doing the work. The first is the ending: after Atticus, Cassius and Magnus, a four-syllable Latin name reading -us no longer sounds like a costume. The second is the man. Very few names come attached to a book still in print after eighteen centuries, and parents who know the Meditations tend to want the association more than they want the gold.

The name has stayed largely historical since — which is precisely why it is available.
