Bartholomew is a patronymic doing duty as a name. The Aramaic bar means son of, and Talmai was an existing personal name — a king of Geshur called Talmai appears in 2 Samuel as the father of one of David's wives. So the apostle listed in Matthew, Mark and Luke is being identified the way people were identified in first-century Judea: by his father. Whatever his own given name was, it did not make the list. A long tradition identifies him with Nathanael, who appears in John's gospel and nowhere in the other three, though that identification is inference rather than record.
The name travelled well because of the apostle. Medieval England gave it to churches, hospitals and one of the great annual fairs: Bartholomew Fair ran at Smithfield in London from 1133 until 1855 and got its own comedy from Ben Jonson in 1614. Elsewhere it turns grimmer — the St Bartholomew's Day massacre of French Protestants in 1572 is still shorthand for religious slaughter. English speech chewed the name down to Bat and Bartle, which is where surnames like Bartlett and Batts come from. Its loudest modern echo is a cartoon: Bart Simpson's full name is Bartholomew JoJo Simpson.

Bartholomew has the same appeal as Theodore or Nathaniel — a formal name with real history that arrives pre-fitted with a short, unpretentious daily version. Bartholomew Roberts, the Welsh sailor better remembered as Black Bart, took more prizes than any other pirate of the early 18th century before he was killed off West Africa in 1722. Living, and considerably more respectable: Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople, senior bishop of the Eastern Orthodox churches since 1991. The Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias, first European to round the Cape of Good Hope, carries the same name in its Iberian form.
