History & meaning
Bijan comes from a warrior family in the Shahnameh without being a warrior's name in feel. He is the son of Giv and grandson of Gudarz, sent out to clear a plague of wild boar from a border district, and on the way home he is talked into visiting a Turanian festival grove. Manijeh, daughter of the enemy king Afrasiab, is camped there. Three days later she has him drugged and smuggled into her father's city in a covered litter, and when he is discovered Afrasiab has him thrown into a pit sealed with an enormous stone. Manijeh, stripped of rank and turned out, begs food in the streets and lowers it to him. Rostam comes for him disguised as a merchant with a caravan, lifts the stone, and takes them both home.
What makes the episode unusual is the frame around it. Ferdowsi opens the tale with a scene from his own house: a dark night, no sleep, a companion who fetches a candle and wine and reads him the story out of an old book so that he can put it into verse. There is almost nothing else like that in fifty thousand couplets, and it has made Bijan and Manijeh the piece readers reach for when they want to hear the poet rather than the epic. The name itself is less transparent than the story. It is Wezhan in Middle Persian and is usually glossed simply as hero, but no derivation has carried the field, so treat the gloss as convention rather than etymology.
Why parents choose it
The soft central consonant makes it one of the gentler Persian names for boys, and it is short, spellable, and already present in American life. It is also the rare epic name attached to a romance with a rescue at the end rather than a funeral.
