Behzad

History & meaning
Persian builds names the way it builds compound nouns, by fitting two transparent pieces together, and beh is one of its busiest first pieces. It is the word for good, and it makes behtar, better, and behtarin, best. Set it in front of a noun and you get a small family of names an Iranian reads at a glance: Behnam, of good name; Behrouz, of a good day, so lucky; Behdad, of good justice. The second element here, zād, means born, and it works the same way on the other side of the compound. So Behzad is well born — but the Persian sense is closer to good stock or good breeding in the sense of character, and it functions as a compliment rather than a claim on a title.
The name's prestige is artistic. Kamal ud-Din Behzad ran the book workshop of the Timurid sultan Husayn Bayqara at Herat in the late fifteenth century, in the circle around the poet and patron Mir Ali Shir Nava'i, and after the Safavid conquest he moved west to Tabriz and took charge of the royal library. What set him apart was people: crowded, individualised figures doing recognisable things, labourers on scaffolding, a bath-house at work, faces that are not interchangeable. Later Persian, Ottoman and Mughal painters treated him as the standard, and forgers signed his name for centuries afterwards — which is why art historians argue hard about which surviving pictures are genuinely his. Iranians know the name the way an Italian knows Raphael.
Why parents choose it
It is a good-wish name with a first-rank artist attached, which is a rare combination. The sound is balanced and unhurried, the meaning needs no footnote in Persian, and the two syllables sit well against both short and long surnames.
