Brennan is one of the more common Irish surnames and one of the least confidently translated. The main source is Ó Braonáin, "descendant of Braonán", where Braonán is a diminutive of braon. The dictionary sense of braon is a drop — of rain, of water — and Irish poetry extends it toward sorrow or a tear, which is how the internet ended up offering you "little drop of water", "moisture" and "sadness" with equal certainty. All three are downstream of the same guess. The name is best understood as a family name built on a personal name whose sense has faded.
There is a further wrinkle worth knowing. Brennan also served as the English spelling for Mac Branáin, a Roscommon name from bran, raven, which is a completely different word. Two families with different ancestries walked out of the nineteenth century sharing one anglicised surname. The given name came later and elsewhere: North American parents began using Brennan in the 1980s, in the company of Donovan, Keegan and Nolan, and it has held a small, stable place ever since without ever going fashionable.
