History & meaning
Donovan began as a remark about somebody's hair. The Irish surname is Ó Donnabháin, descendant of Donndubhán, and that personal name stacks two colour words: donn, brown, and dubh, black or dark, finished with the affectionate diminutive -án. Dark brown, more or less, or the little dark-brown one. Early Irish naming was full of this — colour terms did the work that surnames do now, and a man tagged for his colouring in the tenth century could hand that tag to a thousand years of descendants.
The descendants are traceable. The Uí Donnabháin were a sept of the Uí Fidgenti in what is now County Limerick; Donnubán mac Cathail, the ancestor the surname is built on, appears in the Irish annals in the violent politics surrounding Mathgamain, brother of Brian Boru. After the Norman arrival the family shifted south-west into Carbery in County Cork, where the name is still densest. Its life as a first name is much shorter and largely American: twentieth-century Irish-American families promoted it the way they promoted Sullivan and Brennan, and the Scottish singer Donovan — Donovan Leitch, of Sunshine Superman — gave it a second identity in the 1960s that has never quite worn off.
Why parents choose it
Three syllables that never feel long, a fashionable -n ending, and no pronunciation trap. Donovan is also one of the few names offering a genuinely underused nickname: Van is short, cool and almost nobody's. Among Irish names in American use it sits in the useful middle ground, familiar enough to be spelled correctly and rare enough to stay yours.
