History & meaning
Christianus started life as a label rather than a name, and not a friendly one: Acts records that the disciples were first called Christians at Antioch, apparently by people outside the group. The word runs back through Greek christianos to christos, the anointed one, which is itself a translation of Hebrew mashiach. Only in medieval Europe did it settle into use as a given name. Spanish, which has no use for a silent h, spells it Cristian; Spain and much of South America also write Cristián with an accent, which drags the stress onto the final syllable and produces a noticeably different name in the mouth.
The form travelled a long way from Spain. It is standard in Mexico, Colombia, Chile and Argentina, and Romanian independently arrived at the identical spelling, which is why a Romanian footballer and a Mexican pop singer can share a name letter for letter. Italian and Portuguese prefer Cristiano. In the United States the h-spelling Christian is the one in the top 100; Cristian is the version Spanish-speaking families register, and it manages to look unmistakably Hispanic while being impossible to misspell badly.
Why parents choose it
It is a faith name that does not demand much of you. Nobody hears a sermon in Cristian the way they might in Salvador or Jesús — it has been an ordinary boys' name for a thousand years. It also crosses borders without paperwork trouble, keeps its own short form in Cris, and gives a daughter's name, Cristina, for free.
