A surprising share of Swahili male names belong to figures the Bible and the Quran hold in common, and they arrived in Arabic dress. Musa is Moses, Issa is Jesus, Selemani is Solomon, and Daudi is David. The chain is easy to follow: Hebrew Dawid became Arabic Dawud, and Swahili, which does not like a word to end on a consonant, rounded Dawud off into Daudi. What makes Daudi unusual is that the Christian route ended in the same place — the Swahili Bible renders the king's name Daudi too — so a Tanzanian Daudi may be Muslim or Christian and the name gives nothing away.
The meaning travels intact. Hebrew scholarship glosses dawid as "beloved", tying it to the root d-w-d, and while the name's ultimate origin has been argued over for a century, no competing reading has displaced it. The bearer is the same in both traditions and formidable in both: the shepherd who kills Goliath, unites the tribes and reigns from Jerusalem around 1010 to 970 BC, and who is remembered above all as a poet. Daudi Chwa II was Kabaka of Buganda from 1897 until his death in 1939, crowned as an infant after the exile of his father and reigning through the whole colonial protectorate period. Daudi Kabaka, no relation, was one of the founding voices of Kenyan popular music: his twist and benga records of the 1960s, including "Helule Helule", were hits well beyond East Africa.
