Dominic began as a calendar name. Late Roman and early medieval parents gave Dominicus to a child born on dies Dominica, the Lord's day, and this is not one of those folk etymologies invented afterwards to make a name sound better — it is the standard account, and Spanish still displays the machinery in the open, where domingo is simultaneously Sunday and a man's name. The root is dominus, lord or master of a household, the same word that gives English dominate and dominion. The name means belonging to him.
Its range comes from one Castilian. Domingo de Guzmán, born around 1170, founded the Order of Preachers, and the Dominicans took the name into every university town in medieval Europe. Italy in particular absorbed it thoroughly: Domenico became a workhorse given name in the south, and it was Italian emigration that planted Dominic in American cities in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It has never been fashionable, in the sense of spiking, and has never gone away either.
