History & meaning
Girma is a plain Amharic noun: majesty, dignity, the bearing that makes a room go quiet. It comes down unchanged from Geʽez, where girmā carried a stronger charge still, closer to awe or reverence — the quality that inspires respect rather than the trappings that display it. That is worth holding on to, because it is the difference between naming a son for a throne and naming him for the presence a throne is supposed to have.
The word also did formal work. Its adjective, girmawi, is the Amharic for "His Majesty", the style that stood in front of an emperor's name in proclamations, including Haile Selassie's. A boy called Girma is therefore carrying the noun the imperial title was made from — an unusually direct route from statecraft into the nursery. Like other Ethiopian given names it becomes the second name of the next generation, since a father's given name is passed on in place of a surname, a system described on our page for Abebe.
Why parents choose it
Two syllables, an unmistakable meaning, and no diminutive to erode it. Girma sounds dignified in Amharic and travels well into English, where the hard opening g and the open final vowel keep it firm without making it hard to say. Famous Girmas
Girma Wolde-Giorgis served as President of Ethiopia from 2001 to 2013; his second name, Wolde Giorgis, is itself one of the old Geʽez compounds meaning "son of George", a pattern set out on our page for Gebre. Girma Bèyènè, pianist, arranger and singer, was one of the architects of the Addis Ababa sound of the late 1960s and early 1970s, later rediscovered through the Éthiopiques reissues.
Consider instead
Getachew, "their lord", occupies the same register of standing with a longer shape. Berhanu means "his light" and is warmer. Tewodros is the Amharic Theodore and comes attached to the nineteenth-century emperor of that name.
